Presidents of Tunisia, Italy discuss Libya, illegal immigrants


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The presidents of Tunisia and Italy held talks on their bilateral relations, on Tunisian-EU relations, regional affairs and refugee and illegal immigration at Tunis on Monday.

The visiting Sergio Mattarella expressed his nation's keenness to increase its cooperation with Tunisia, adding that this is demonstrated in Tunisia being the first stop of his overseas trip, according to a Tunisian presidency statement.

He, in turn, urged the European Union to boost its support of Tunisia, which he described as being the only nation in the region to have succeeded in its democratic shift.
On the fate of Tunisian illegal immigrants who went missing in their attempt to cross the Mediterranean, Mattarella said that Italy will be reporting to Tunisian authorities.

Speaking about Libya, he expressed the view that any resolution of the conflict could only be through political means - by helping the different sides form a national unity government.

For his part, Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi noted to Italy's important role in supporting Tunis to carry out its democratic transition, development plans and fight against terrorism.

The president urged authorities in Italy to do all in their means to determine the fate of the missing Tunisian migrants, revealing that both countries saw eye-to-eye on the need to find a radical solution to the problem.

He also noted that both acknowledge the need to usher forward a political solution in Libya.
