Yemen needs a political solution

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) A UAE paper has said that Yemen needs a political solution to the current fighting, under which Al Houthis must accept that they are a part of a much greater Yemeni whole and agree to withdraw from the cities that they have recently occupied.

"This process will be part of a new political structure that will probably follow the lines of federal governance agreed at the 2012 National Dialogue, which was attended by many parties, including Al Houthis," said the Gulf News in an editorial on Tuesday.

The agreed plan was to create a new layer of substantially autonomous provinces, giving each region the space in which to focus on their local concerns. Last week's five-day truce in fighting in Yemen was important for two reasons. The more immediate one was that food and essential supplies could get through to the increasingly desperate people. The longer-term impact is that it shows that talks can happen and they can have an impact on the ground, which points towards an eventual political solution in the country.

The end of the truce followed an important meeting in Riyadh, which was designed to start looking for a political solution. It was attended by Yemeni President, Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, and Prime Minister, Khalid Bahah, along with a very respectable number of more than 400 delegates from a whole range of parties.

"It is a matter of regret that continued hostile acts and acquisition of new territory, even during the ceasefire, by Al Houthi militia meant that the truce could not be extended and hostilities have now resumed with the warplanes of the Saudi-led coalition in action over Al Houthi sites," added the paper.

"But at least it is clear to all sides that the military action is designed to encourage a situation in which talks can start over finding a way to a political solution", concluded the Dubai-based daily.
