Kuwait- Warning Of Hike In Prices Of 'Foodstuffs' During Ramadan

(MENAFN- Arab Times) Chairperson of Kuwaiti Foodstuff Manufacturers and Importers Association Abdullah Al-Buaijan has warned about the hike in prices of foodstuffs during Ramadan due to delay in the release of test results for thousands of imported food items, reports Al-Rai daily.

Al-Buaijan said several officials of cooperative societies indicated that the delay led to inadequate supply of some items and increase in prices of others. He explained the increase in prices of some commodities is around 20 to 30 percent. Meanwhile, Chairperson of Yarmouk Cooperative Society Faisal Al-Ansari stated the cooperative societies will bear extra burden of relieving Kuwaiti and expatriate consumers in case the concerned companies raise the prices of their products.

He cited as an example the apricot that cost 350 fils in 2003 and rose to 900 fils in 2014 while the current price is KD1.350 with the possibility of increasing to KD1.500. He added the price of rice has increased by five percent since the companies stopped receiving subsidy. He went on to say the price of fresh meat is about 10 percent higher now and it could increase further.
