Israel settlers march onto Old City in East Jerusalem


(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Thousands of Israeli settlers on Sunday stormed into the Old City in East Jerusalem and danced outside the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque, carrying Israeli flags.

Eyewitnesses said some Israeli politicians participated in the march along with thousands of settlers.

Israel radio estimated the number of participants in the march at 10,000. It said they all headed to the Hait al-Buraq € known to Jews as the "Western Wall" € to perform prayers.

Clashes erupted between Palestinian youths who carried Palestinian flags and march participants, leaving two Israeli policemen injured, Israel's Channel 10 said.

It added that six Palestinians were detained by Israeli police as well.

Jewish groups had invited settlers to enter the the Al-Aqsa Mosque Compound on Sunday to celebrate the Jewish Yom Yerushalayim holiday (Jerusalem Day), the day when Israel took control of the Old City of East Jerusalem after the 1967 war.
