Jordan interior minister resigns

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) King Abdullah II of Jordan has accepted the resignation of Interior Minister Hussein al-Majali, the official Jordanian television reported Sunday.

It added that the king also asked two other top security officials to retire.

King Abdullah sacked General Police Chief Tawfiq Tawalbeh and Gendarmerie Director Ahmed al-Sweilimin, the television said.

Prime Minister Abdullah Ensour cited the security officials' "failure" to run Jordan's security apparatus effectively.

He said in a statement that al-Majali submitted his resignation after security institutions failed to coordinate effectively on issues related to citizens' security and stability.

Sunday's move follows popular anger at a recent heavy-handed security crackdown on some of Jordan's political activists.
