Militants release Tunisian captives held in Libya

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Unknown militants in Libyan capital Tripoli on Monday set free a number of Tunisian nationals who were held captive for several hours, according to eyewitnesses.

Several Tunisian workers were detained for hours by unknown gunmen following the Tunisian authorities' arrest of Walid al-Qalib, a leading member of the pro-Islamist Dawn of Libya forces which currently controls Tripoli, eyewitnesses told Anadolu Agency.

Witnesses suggested that the kidnappers have close ties to al-Qalib, since they set the Tunisian captives free following his release by the Tunisian authorities.

A leading Dawn of Libya member, who spoke to Anadolu Agency on the condition of anonymity, said that Tunisian authorities apprehended al-Qalib on Sunday morning in Tunisia, noting that this was not his first visit to the country.

"He legally passed through the border crossing between Libya and Tunisia several times," the source said.

The source went on to note that al-Qalib was released hours after his arrest while the reason for his detention remains unclear.

Tunisian authorities could not be reached for an immediate comment on the witnesses' assertions.
