Mutual understanding of Belt, Road initiative vital - KUNA deputy chief

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Deputy Director-General for Editorial Sector at Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) Saad Al-Ali stressed on the importance of achieving mutual understanding of China's Belt and Road economic initiative.

Al-Ali's statement was made late on Saturday, while he headed a GCC delegation at a seminar on the initiative held in Beijing, China. The GCC delegation included academics, media figures and representatives of strategic studies' centers.

Arab and GCC countries share strong ties with China, he said, adding that the latter must give thorough details on the benefits of joining the economic initiative for each one of the GCC countries.

The delegation had met with officials in the Foreign Affairs Leading Group of the Communist Party of China and the National Development and Reform Commission, while they will also meet with members of the Chinese government, Al-Ali noted.

The initiative, also known as the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road concept, was presented by Chinese President Xi Jinping in September 2013. It includes 65 countries.

The aim behind it is to create economic, cultural, industrial and commercial cooperation between Asian, African and European countries, in order to develop infrastructure and provide job opportunities.

Last April, the Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait noted that Kuwait could contribute positively to the Silk Road and Maritime Route, which would account for one third of the global trade.

He also said that Kuwait "could be the intersection" of this project and Boubyan Island could be the location of Kuwait's new financial and commercial hub.
