QU programme, Al Bairaq, selected as one of 2015 WISE Awards finalists

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Al Bairaq, an innovative high school programme presented by Qatar University' Centre for Advanced Materials (QU-CAM), has been selected as one of the 2015 WISE (World Innovation Summit of Education) Awards finalist.

Al Bairaq has been chosen from 15 projects from 12 countries shortlisted for their innovative solutions to education, adoption of cutting-edge practices, and their positive social impact.

The finalist projects will be evaluated by a pre-jury of internationally-recognised education experts and six winning projects will be announced in September and celebrated at the seventh World Innovation Summit for Education between November 3 and 5.

Al Bairaq promotes innovation, entrepreneurship and applied research in line with Qatar National Vision 2030, and the country's ambitions towards a knowledge-based economy. It stresses interdisciplinary research that can cover any of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) subjects.

Under the programme's modules 'I am a Researcher,' 'I am Discovering Materials,' 'Science in Sport' and 'Problem solving,' students are guided through projects and work in teams with university-level scientists.

They formulate research questions related to materials science; build a research plan; investigate using state-of-the-art technology and scientific instrumentation; and report findings in a public forum evaluated by representatives from business and industry. Faculty members train and mentor the future generation of scientists, and help them develop and enhance critical-thinking, problem-solving and team-work skills.

Dr Noora Al Thani, Supervisor, Al Bairaq, said, "Being named among the top finalists of 2015 WISE Awards highlights Al Bairaq's contribution to strengthening links between high school students and high education institutions, and advancing a culture of research in Qatar.

"This shows Al Bairaq's commitment to help high school students acquire research values, skills and professional experiences and shape them into the next generation of leaders and researchers to contribute to the country's development and growth towards a knowledge-based economy."

Stavros N Yiannouka, CEO, WISE, said,"This year the WISE Awards finalists again demonstrate how sustainable and creative solutions help overcome barriers to education and transform lives everywhere. These grassroots efforts are having a positive impact on their communities. Our role at WISE is to help disseminate excellence in education on a global scale.
