Italian PM rules out military intervention in Libya

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Friday nobody thinks of intervening militarily in, or sending troops to Libya to stem the flow of illegal immigrants across the Mediterranean or export democracy.

This option is not on the table at present, Renzi told reporters here while commenting on the security turmoil in Libya and the European measures against human trafficking.

Libya has become the launch pad and logistical center for illegal immigration from North Africa to the Italian coastline with 91 percent of irregular immigrants coming from there; this requires a response from the United Nations, he stressed.

The UN is to debate a draft resolution, raised by the European group, to allow monitoring the Libyan coasts and combat human smuggling which constitutes a shameful crime of trifling with human life, the prime minister went on.
