Malian gov't, armed groups sign peace accord

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Malian parties involved in dialogue to settle the conflict in the north of the country signed Friday a peace agreement in the capital, Bamako, the Algerian radio reported.

The Mali government several armed groups from northern Mali signed the agreement in a ceremony attended by Algerian parliament speaker Abdulqader ben Saleh, Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra, African leaders and international officials, said the radio.

The accord was also signed by the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA) and two of its minor members: the Coordination for the People of Azawad (CPA), and the Coordination of Movements and Fronts of Patriotic Resistance.

The peace accord, who was initialed in Algiers yesterday, was not signed by the Tuareq-dominated National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, the High Council for the Unity of Azawad and the Arab Movement of Azawad, said the radio.

The mediation team is led by Algeria, and consists of the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, UN, EU, Organization of Islamic Cooperation, Burkina Faso, Mauritania, Niger and Chad.

Today's agreement will pave way for stability in northern Mali and would thus restore calm to the African country.

It was concluded following five rounds of dialogue, which began in June 2014.
