Federal Customs Authority to hold IPR Forum

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) The Federal Customs Authority, FCA, will hold the Forum on Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, IPR, in Dubai next Wednesday. The forum will be held in collaboration with the World Customs Organisation, WCO, and the Institute of Training and Judicial Studies in the UAE, on 20th and 21st May.

The forum will see the participation of local customs departments, local and federal bodies in the UAE, as well as local and international private companies, along with representatives of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Khalid Ali Al Bustani, Acting Director-General of the FCA, said that the forum will shed light on the importance of protecting intellectual property rights from a legal and customs perspective. He stated that the forum will highlight the role of the country and its institutions in preserving these rights, with great emphasis on the role of the customs sector and customs departments in combating counterfeiting and piracy. He went on to say that the forum will increase public awareness of the dangers of commercial fraud to both consumers and producers.

Al Bustani added that the forum serves as an important tool to achieve the strategic goals of the Federal Customs Authority, namely, ensuring the security of people, facilitating trade and strengthening cooperation with the external world. He pointed out that the protection of IPRs is one of the basic roles played by customs officials to protect the rights of producers and customers from the negative impact of counterfeit goods, thus ensuring society's safety and security.

He also noted that the event will address the recent developments in the IPM Mobile programme on smart phones for combating counterfeiting and piracy and the country and private sector's experience in applying it.

Suoud Salem Al Agroobi, Director of International Relations at FCA, said that the UAE customs departments are among the major institutions required to protect IPRs in the light of security and economic duties and authorities assigned to them by virtue of the GCC Common Customs Law and the related local laws regarding the direct and sovereign supervision of the entry, exit and transit of goods through customs outlets by sea, land and air.

He added that the forum is being held for the second year in a row, noting that the event is a prime example of constructive cooperation between federal government institutions, local departments, the private sector and international organisations represented by the WCO.

Al Agroobi commended the local customs departments for their tremendous role in combating counterfeiting and piracy and protecting IP rights. He pointed out the great cooperation of such departments in applying the IPM Mobile programme to combat counterfeiting and piracy through smart phones within customs outlets.
