S. Korea's Kimchi trade deficit widens on Chinese imports

(MENAFN) Data showed that South Korea's deficit in the trade of kimchi, the traditional dish, has widened in the past few years due to the arrival of Chinese products, Yonhap News reported.

The deficit stood at USD84.09 million over the past five years in April. South Korea imported 212,938 tons of kimchi worth USD104.3 million last year, while exporting 24,742 tons valued at USD84 million

South Korean kimchi is virtually banned in the Chinese market due to Chinese regulations requiring all vegetables to have fewer than 30 colon bacillus per 100 grams, which fermented kimchi cannot meet.
