New Guinness record set in Oman

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman has set a new Guinness World Record for the largest mosaic made up of greeting cards honouring His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said at 199.2sq m.

H H Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq al Said advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos bin Said received the record from a Guinness representative at a ceremony recently held at Seeb International School.

The mosaic is made up of about 7000 greeting cards in the form of the Omani national flag and measures 18mx11m signifying Oman's National Day 18th November. It beats the previous record which was set in China in November 2014.

Guinness judge Samer Khallouf said there could be no gaps between the cards they have to form a recognisable image (the Omani flag) that is proportionally accurate and the cards used must have been commercially available to maintain fairness.

Khallouf said he worked with local organisers for around a month to certify the attempt. The final piecing took around two and a half days he said.

The Guinness record for the largest single card is 14m high according to Khallouf which has to be able to stand on its own.

The record has now been registered on Guinness' website along with 40000 other records. The Guinness Book of World Records displays only three to four thousand of those records with variations every year. 'Guinness is all about ordinary people doing extraordinary things' he said.

The project was a collaboration between the Ministry of Education and Al Omaniya Educational Services (Iskan Knowledge). 'We developed the idea which would be a special gift something unique to His Majesty the Sultan when he came back' said Iskan Knowledge CEO Danny Harrison.

The cards were signed by the students and teachers of 182 private schools in Muscat as a way of honouring the return of His Majesty the Sultan. 'It all came together nicely linking the concept of all the private school students having the opportunity to write cards. They've all come together to give this special gift' he said. 'I think it's a great achievement. I think it's quite special. We've done something different.'

Oman already holds Guinness records for the largest marble mosaic largest dagger and largest serving of kabsa.
