US expert lauds Kuwait conf. on health economics

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) A visiting US economist has commended the outcomes of the Kuwait Conference and Exhibition on National Health Economics which wrapped up here on Tuesday.

"It was a very ambitious and very enjoyable event. It was really a wonderful opportunity to hear from representatives in health economics from Gulf, Mexico, Ukraine, Britain and others," said, Amber Jessup, a US economist, to KUNA following the event.

The conference was so fruitful that it provided a chance to promote cooperation among many countries in many areas, she added.

Asked about the cooperation between the US and Kuwait in this field, she said there is a good opportunity between the two countries for further cooperation in many areas.

"We have works in Kuwait. The US, in Kuwait and in the world, has a number of organizations and executives in many fields. I think there are a lot of opportunities to promote cooperation between the two countries for further investments. Kuwait's citizens travel to the US for treatment as healthcare in the US is attractive," she noted.

"The better tracking of drugs as they're given to the population and looking for cases where safety problems arise and tracking how affective they are and regular use which I think is a wonderful opportunity because often in clinical trials the populations where the drugs are tested may not be a perfect match for people in the Arab population here," Jessup said.

Also, there is a lot of discussion about the need for understanding patient centered outcomes and so this is something that has been emphasized in the west, she added.

"We have Patient-Centered Outcome Research Institutes and this is something that was mentioned here," she made clear.

She noted that one of the big recommendations was on the continued influence of understanding the pharmacogenomics and how well drugs work and getting the best value for investments in health care.

This is a shared goal for the US and Kuwait and every country that was here, the US expert said, noting that innovators need incentives to develop new and innovative drugs, and that providing intellectual protections allows innovators to make profits.

The conference sought to develop a strong foundation of decision-making methods needed to promote the efficient and equitable allocation of resources in the provision of preventive and curative medicine across the globe.

It was a chance to expose the audience to the fundamental role of health economics in determining the cost-effectiveness of healthcare interventions.

The event highlighted practical applications to show the economic thinking in the assessment of new health technologies is explored to provide a basic understanding of the concept of health economics as an integral part of the national health policy.

The event also highlighted its impact of principle of health technology
assessment on the formation of effective health policy that lead to improved health and economic decision-making and the role of the private sector in encouraging the growth and empowerment of the healthcare services and ensuring greater economic growth and stability.
