EU urges restraint in Burundi

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The European Union has urged all actors in Burundi to show restraint and avoid violence after reports of a military coup against President Pierre Nkurunziza who is outside of the country.

EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a statement underlined the importance that all political forces respect the principles of the Arusha Agreements which was signed in 200 and paved the way for the holding of democratic elections in 2005 in Burundi, a small, landlocked country in Central Africa.

"In particular the holding of inclusive, credible and transparent elections, in a political environment free of intimidation or violence, is an essential element of those Agreements. The conditions for such elections should be re-established as soon as possible to allow the people to choose a legitimate and constitutional government," said the EU foreign policy chief.
