UNRWA budget in 2015 rises to $140 million


(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The budget of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in 2015 has increased to $140 million in order to cover the needs of the refugees in the Kingdom's camps, Director of Agency Operations in Jordan, Roger Davies said.

During his visit to Heteen camp Wednesday evening, Davies said that the UNRWA offers various services to the Palestinian refugees in Jordan, noting that the Agency's social affairs department provides humanitarian aid for about 59,000 families and about 18,000 other families are still on the waiting list for assistance.

He also noted that the agency's schools need around 100 teachers, while the number of applicants reached some 13,000.

The UN official praised the coordination with the Jordanian government, especially with the Department of Palestinian Affairs.

Head of UNRWA office in Zarqa, Ahmed Dabash, appreciated the efforts by Davies in urging countries to increase their support for the agency in order to continue providing services at the camps.

Head of the camp's committee, Khalaf Degdashe, talked about the importance of improving the infrastructure and the deteriorating environmental situation inside the camps.
