French economy grows surprisingly in Q1

(MENAFN) The National Statistics Institute (INSEE) said France registered a surprised growth in gross domestic product (GDP) in the first quarter, with the economy growing 0.6 percent, KUNA reported.

The unexpected increase in GDP was spurred mainly by domestic demand, which itself was boosted 0.8 percent in the January-to-March period, compared with only 0.1 percent expansion the previous month.

By economic standards, growth must reach an annual 1.5 percent, at least, before jobs will be created. The government is predicting GDP growth of at least 1.6 percent for this year.
