Arab Media Forum tells artists to be role models for youth

(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Frank and forthright opinions about the role of artists were expressed by artists at a panel discussion on the second day of the 14th Arab Media Forum in Dubai on Wednesday.

"Whether they are young or old, the society looks at us artists as role models and the society in turn should respect our creativity," Balqees Ahmed Fathi, an Emirati singer, said participating in the concluding session 'What is the Role of the Artists Today?' at the Arab Media Forum.

"Despite differences in the Arab communities, millions follow them in social media," she said.

Moderated by Rabia Al Zayat, TV Presenter and Host from Lebanon, the session witnessed young artists expressing frank opinions about the role of the artists today and how the society should respond to their creativity.

"Artists are messengers, who carry heavenly messages to one and all with objectivity and sublime values. Therefore, they should be honest and responsible, reflecting human values. At the same time they should have freedom of expression, who can raise their voice against oppression. Real artists can reach out to the millions," said Emirati singer Latifa Al Arfaoi.

This view was echoed by Saba Mubarak, a Jordanian actress and producer. "The barrier is the mindset. Entertainment has become a cheap word. Artists should have their own opinions. They can influence people as millions follow them."

She cited the case of how Iranian cinema was winning awards in Cannes, although there is political instability in that country.

Lotfi Bouchnak, Tunisian singer and composer, said Arab experience is that they pay attention to performing artists and arts. However, Latifa bemoaned the situation in the Arab World saying they have no intellectual property rights. She also suggested that artists from trouble-torn countries should be welcomed by other countries.

Saba joined her in suggesting that all countries should host artists. "It is unfortunate that Arab theatre does not exist. The audiences are following mediocrity and not creative people.

Saba was critical of the role of the media and said they support mediocrity without constructive criticism.

The Arab Media Forum 2015 is being attended by more than 2,000 delegates from the region and the wider world. A third of the speakers this year are foreign experts.
