Jordan, ILO discuss cooperation over child labor

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Secretary General of the Ministry of Labor, Hamada Abu Nejma, on Wednesday discussed areas of cooperation, mainly in the field of child labor, with Ansaf Nathem, international expert on child labor from the International Labor Organization ILO.

Abu Nejma said child labor in the Kingdom has a negative impact on the child's physical, psychological, and social welfare and prevents him or her from completing their education, noting that concerted national and international efforts are needed to address this problem.

He also noted that the large number of Syrian refugees in Jordan has compounded the problem by doubling the number of child laborers in the country. He called on the ILO and the UN to do more to combat this phenomenon.

The expert briefed Abu Nejma on reports issued by the ILO on Jordan's child labor project, "Moving Towards a Child Labor Free Jordan," adding that the organization had agreed to expand the project's term in the Kingdom.

He also hailed the ministry's active role in combating this serious problem.

Abu Nejma appreciated the organization's role in following up on the implementation of this project, which aims to improve the labor administrations' policies for the member states.

During the meeting, the two sides agreed to launch a national survey to study the worst forms of child labor next June.
