11,449 displaced Nigerians return from Niger: Agency

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Nigeria's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday confirmed the return of up to 11,449 Nigerians who had fled to neighboring Niger at the height of the Boko Haram insurgency in the country's northeastern region.

"NEMA has so far registered a total of 11, 449 Nigerian returnees from the Republic of Niger at the transit camp in Geidam in Yobe State," spokesman Manzo Ezekiel said in a statement.

He said a total of 7,000 returnees have been transported to their home respective states.

"Transportation of the returnees continues as more high capacity buses and vehicles have been engaged by NEMA to fully transport them to their various states," Ezekiel said.

NEMA Director General Muhammad Sani Sidi said the relief agency is fully committed to transporting the returnees to their states,

He said more relief supports have also been deployed to support the returnees while at the transit camp in Geidam.

Since last week, Nigeria has been receiving nationals, who had fled to Niger during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency, which ravaged their villages in much of Nigeria's northeast.

The army has, however, rolled back much of the gains made by Boko Haram, liberating several of the towns earlier captured by the militants and freeing hundreds of hostages in the past two weeks.
