UN's Mistura meets Turkish, French officials on Syria

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Staffan de Mistura met Turkish, French and Syrian envoys during Geneva consultations on Tuesday.

During Tuesday's Geneva Consultations on Syria, "Special Envoy de Mistura held an in-depth discussion with a Turkish delegation headed by Can Dizdar, Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," the office of UN Special Envoy for Syria said in a statement.

"Dizdar also shared his government's perspectives on the implementation of the Geneva Communique and the situation in Syria," UN added.

The Syria talks in Geneva that started last week come ahead of the June three-year anniversary of the Geneva Communique, which laid out a six-point plan to stop the violence and move the two sides in Syria towards a political settlement.

"It is also critical to hear the views of key regional actors, who are also dealing with the repercussions of this conflict," Mistura said in the statement.

Earlier, Mistura had said Turkey had an important role in the region and would participate in Geneva consultations on Syria.

Turkey pushed for full implementation of the Geneva Communique peace plan during the meeting with Mistura in Geneva.

"l explained to Mistura and his team the importance of fully implementing the Geneva Communique without wasting more time," Dizdar had said following the meeting with Mistura.

Mistura also met with Syrian opposition figures Louay Hussein, chairman of the Building the Syrian State political party and Hassan Abdul Azim, chairman of the National Coordination Committee for Democratic Change (NCC) to discuss a political solution for Syria and the dire situation in the country.

Furthermore, Mistura met with a French delegation headed by Nicolas de Riviere, director general of political affairs and security in the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mistura and Riviere "discussed his government's views on the need for an urgent political solution in Syria. They also touched upon recent developments in and around Syria, which could affect prospects for a peaceful resolution of the conflict," the UN said.

More than 40 Syrian groups, including Syrian opposition armed groups, have been invited to attend the talks in Geneva.

The Syrian government, neighboring countries, and members of the UN Security Council have all been invited for the low-key, separate discussions on the current crisis.

The Geneva consultations on Syria started on Tuesday, May 5 and are expected to last up to six weeks, although there is no cut-off date.

Syria's civil war, now in its fifth year, has led to the deaths of more than 220,000 people and forced almost 4 million to flee the country.
