Egypt's war on terrorism 'comprehensive': Sisi

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi said Tuesday his country's fight against terrorism was comprehensive, warning that certain countries were seeking to "impose" their agendas and threaten Egypt's national security.

"The fight against terrorism tackles poverty and illiteracy as well as providing an enlightened religious discourse that deals with false ideas," al-Sisi said in a televised speech.

He said that 600 "terrorists" had been detained in Egypt in April.

According to al-Sisi, Egyptian police and army forces had destroy 150 "terrorist locations" and arrested 188 wanted militants in the Sinai Peninsula.

For almost two years, Egyptian authorities have tried to crack down on militants in the restive peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the blockaded Gaza Strip.

The campaign comes amid a spike in attacks on security personnel since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi by the army in mid-2013.

On Sunday, a union of tribes in the Sinai Peninsula decided to form two groups of tribal youths to help the army in its ongoing fight against Daesh-affiliated Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, which has claimed most attacks in the area.

"The war on terrorism is not being fought by the police and army alone, but also with the help of the people of Sinai," al-Sisi said.

Al-Sisi went on to warn that certain countries were seeking to impose their agendas on Egypt.

"Some countries were trying to impose their agendas and threaten Egypt's national security," he said, going on to reiterate that the Egyptian security "is part and parcel of the Gulf security."

With regards to combating corruption, al-Sisi said courts are currently looking into 344 cases of corruption, ranging from bribery, abuse of power, profiteering, seizure of state lands to squandering of public funds.

"The challenges are huge, and so are the efforts being exerted," al-Sisi said.
