Saudi- Changing scenario
(MENAFN- Arab News) This is with reference to the article 'First GCC-France summit makes history' by Abdel Aziz Aluwaisheg (May 12). It is heartening to note that the GCC countries are forging strategic alliances with other global players and broadening their horizon. In the current geopolitical scenario such an approach is of utmost importance. As a matter of fact the entire Muslim world should revisit its policies toward the United States.
Shifting alliances does not mean animosity toward the US. It is all part of the game. Washington has the right to act in self-interest so other countries should also protect their strategic interests. Foreign policies of the Muslim countries should now be independent of the US or in other words these policies should no longer be US-centric. It is true that the US continues to be the sole superpower of the world but the scenario is rapidly changing as the world is moving toward a multi-polar world. The GCC countries should give priority to their interests. The US has let its GCC allies down during the past few years on various fronts. We understand that US has its own interests to protect but it should not interfere in the policies of the Muslim countries seeking to establish ties with France Russia or China. We have had enough of US bullying in the region. The current policies of the US administration will further divide the region along sectarian lines. It seems that the US is trying to install Iran as its policeman in the region. The Arab countries should take all possible steps to prevent this from happening. Saudi Arabia is the major regional power and it should now assert itself in the Muslim world with a new vigor. All Muslims are pinning hopes on Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman to usher them into an era of prosperity and dignity. Rabia Shahid Riyadh
