Foreign minister meets UN chief in Qatar


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) HE the Foreign Minister Dr Khalid bin Mohamed al-Attiyah on Monday held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in New York.

During the meeting, they discussed key developments in the region, including the question of Palestine and the situation in Yemen, Syria and Libya.

The foreign minister highlighted the efforts of the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) to back a political solution in Yemen, noting the importance of a meeting called by Yemeni President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in Riyadh to which various Yemeni parties were invited.

He also stressed the importance of all parties accepting the invitation as well as the role of the UN. He said it was important for all parties to implement the Security Council's resolution 2216.

Al-Attiyah referred to the humanitarian assistance provided by Qatar to the Yemeni people.

On the situation in Syria, the foreign minister reiterated that Geneva 1 communiqué is the basis for a political solution, and expressed support for Special Envoy Staffan de Mistura and his efforts to hold a political dialogue in Geneva.

He said the results of the talks must meet the Syrian people's aspirations.

About the situation in Libya, al-Attiyah expressed Qatar's full support to the efforts of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General Bernardino Leon in order to reach a political solution that satisfies all parties, asserting that the interests of one party should not prevail over another.

The UN secretary-general praised the mediation efforts of Qatar between Eritrea and Djibouti.
