Italy urges rapid intervention to stop illegal immigrants' influx

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Italian government urged the international community Tuesday to put end to influx of illegal immigrants through the Mediterranean and drowning of thousands of them.

The mass immigration from North Africa "is a historic catastrophe," Defense Minister Roberta Pinotti said in a press statement, and hoped the UN would rapidly intervene, echoing remarks by EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini who called for preventing the "Meditarranean from turning into a cemetery." The prime objective should be the cessation of "this massacre" in the middle of the sea, said Pinotti.

She called for deployment of French, German and Irish military vessels, to join the Spanish and French ships already positioned in the Meditarranean.

Thousands of illegal immigrants from Africa are drowning in the Mediterranean because of the poor condition of the boats they were boarding.
