Japan concerned over N. Korean missile test

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Japan is concerned over North Korea's recent test-firing of a submarine-based ballistic missile, the top government spokesman said Monday.

"The government is gathering information about the North's missile program and analyze intelligence on a regular basis with grave concern," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference.

On Saturday, state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said North Korea has successfully conducted a successful underwater test-fire of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un observed the missile launch, describing it as a "world-level strategic weapon," according to KCNA.

"The test-fire fully achieved the latest military, scientific and technical requirements," KCNA said.

It was the first time Pyongyang claimed the test-firing of a submarine-launched ballistic missile.

Citing a South Korean military source, the Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency said North Korea is expected to complete the development of the 2,000-ton class submarine equipped with submarine-based ballistic missiles SLBMs as early as in two or three years.
