Gargash receives UN Special Envoy for Yemen


(MENAFN- Emirates News Agency (WAM)) Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, on Monday received Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmed, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, to discuss the outlook for a political solution to the situation in Yemen that is based on the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative, the outcome of Yemeni national dialogue and the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council, Resolution 2216 in particular.

During the meeting which took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), the two parties discussed the preparations for the forthcoming Yemeni Dialogue Conference in Riyadh, the escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, and the approaches to relief operations in affected areas.

Gargash emphasised to the UN special envoy that the UAE, based on its firm belief in the need to reach an inclusive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, founded on the internationally and regionally agreed references, will do all it takes to back the mission of the UN envoy.

"At this stage, the UAE gives the highest priority to relief operations," he said.

"Based on this baseline, we have had lengthy consultations with the UN envoy as we believe in the urgent need to effectively counter the difficult humanitarian situation in Yemen," Gargash added.

Gargash said that he briefed the UN special envoy for Yemen on the UAE's ongoing relief efforts being carried out through air and land routes.

He also emphasised that it is important that the Houthis and their allies respect the ceasefire to help achieve its goals.

"Our consultations with the UN special envoy will continue to support the political effort required for a solution to the Yemeni crisis," Minister Gargash added.
