US looks to improve shared military defenses with GCC after Camp David

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) In addition to discussing the Iranian nuclear deal and security threats in the region such as Iraq, Yemen, and Libya, the US hopes to close the Camp David talks with GCC leaders by outlining a plan to improve the countries' shared missile and maritime defenses.

"We will also be announcing additional military exercises that are pegged to increase the proficiency and the ability of the GCC states to act interoperably together among themselves and with us to address asymmetric challenges in the maritime domain, counterterrorism, air missile defense," said Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes in a call with reporters on Monday.

He said that there will be "some form of statement emerging from the summit" that reflects US and GCC positions on a range of issues including specific announcements that relates to "better integrating GCC ballistic defense architecture." Rhodes stressed, "There are things that we can do not just bilaterally with the (GCC) countries but collectively with them." He hinted that part of this is more combined military training and exercises.

The US cabinet at the meeting is set to include Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, Secretary of the Treasury Jacob Lew, Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz, Director of the CIA John Brennan, and Director of the National Counterterrorism Center Nick Rasmussen, Rhodes indicated.
