13% of food imports rejected in first quarter


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Supreme Council of Health (SCH) inspected about 62,901 imported food cargoes during January-March this year.

These cargoes included around 933,258,504kg of imported food materials and items, of which 1,181,874kg or 13% of the total imports were rejected, 361,422kg destroyed, and 820,452kg re-exported.

SCH inspectors took 2,774 samples during this period and submitted them for lab tests. A total of 2,560 were proven to be good for human consumption and 214 or 9.6% non-compliant.

The largest quantity, 199,287,587kg, of imported food that entered the country during January-March came through the Abu Samra land post, followed by 719,472,142kg through the Doha port and 14,498,755kg through Hamad International Airport (HIA).

Sauces, oils and juices represented the majority of rejected cargoes at Abu Samra, while dried food materials and meats were the most rejected food items at Doha port; milk and sweets were the majority of rejected items at HIA.
