U.S. embassy: Jordan one of US's most effective partners in the world

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The U.S. embassy stressed the importance of an agreement Jordan and the United States signed on Sunday to support agricultural development in Jordan.

The agreement was inked by U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tomas Vilsack and Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury today.

Vilsack said Jordan is one of the most effective and resilient partners not only in the Middle East but also in the world, and the US Department of Agriculture's assistance will be used to alleviate economic burdens faced by Jordan due to the influx of hundreds of thousands of Syrians, according to a statement issued by the US Embassy today.

He added, "Obama's administration remains committed to investing in the economic stability and opportunities in the Middle East, and as we have done in the past with Jordan and around the world, the U.S. commodities products are not just to feed people, but to promote agricultural and commercial productivity." The embassy statement said that through the Food for Progress Program, the Foreign Agricultural Services Office at the U.S. Department of Agriculture will provide Jordan with 100,000 tons of US wheat worth $25 million, and the Jordanian government will use revenues from its sales to implement projects aimed at improving agricultural productivity and stimulate economic growth.

The embassy noted that the Food for Progress program is the cornerstone of the US Department of Agriculture's efforts to support sustainable agricultural production in developing countries and promote agricultural trade. The program helps developing countries and emerging democracies to modernize and strengthen their agricultural sectors.

Food aid programs at the US Department of Agriculture contribute in achieving goals of President Obama's global initiative, the Feed the Future Initiative (FTF).
