Kuwait- 'Don't Obstruct Law Enforcement'

(MENAFN- Arab Times) It is imperative that no one should obstruct the duties performed by security personnel in the country and anyone accused of such obstruction will be duly prosecuted, a press statement by the Ministry of Interior warned on Saturday. The warning comes in the aftermath of an incident where policemen tried to arrest a lawbreaker with a long rap sheet or criminal record. The incident took place in Omariya where the lawbreaker would not allow police to arrest him and instead hid in a Diwaniya (a neighborhood meeting place for men), said the statement. Those in the Diwaniya refused to give the man up to the police and one of them fired a warning shot in the air to keep the police away, said the ministry statement.

In the ensuing push-and-pull between the police and the men in the Diwaniya, four policemen sustained light injuries requiring hospitalization. However the man who fired the warning shot was eventually arrested and so was the accused with the long rap sheet, said the ministry statement.

A number of people in this incident were charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, allowing a lawbreaking escapee to evade capture by the police, and assaulting law officers. In a related incident, the ministry statement indicated that a number of its police officers were attacked and their cruisers damaged while they were ensuring law and order at a wedding reception hall in the Al-Sabahiya area. In that incident, a number of attendees of the wedding reception decided to recklessly close the roadway in the face of the police cruisers or patrols with the intent not to allow the law officers to carry out their duties properly and peacefully, said the ministry statement. Police however were able to disperse the revelers by among other things firing warning shots in the air. Three of the revelers were arrested and charged with attacking police officers on duty and some other ones were currently being sought after, said the ministry statement
