Sinai tribal youths to help Egypt army fight Daesh

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A union of tribes in Egypt's northeastern Sinai Peninsula on Sunday decided to form two groups of tribal youths to help the army in its ongoing fight against Daesh-affiliated militants.

The first group, according to a statement issued after the union's meeting, will gather intelligence on Daesh militants, their hideouts and underground border tunnels used by the militant group.

"The second group, which comprises young volunteers, will join the army's military operations against terrorists and their hideouts," added the statement.

The Egyptian army has been cracking down on Sinai militants for almost two years now.

A little known militant group, Ansar Beit al-Maqdis, has in the past claimed several deadly attacks on Egyptian police and army force in the parched peninsula, which shares borders with both Israel and the Gaza Strip, and other parts of the country.

The group recently swore allegiance to Daesh and changed its name to Welayet Sinai (Province of Sinai).

Sinai's tribes jumped into the conflict soon after Daesh militants targeted a number of tribal members on charges of aiding the army a few weeks ago.
