Egypt tries officer accused of killing leftist activist

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) The trial of a police officer accused of killing a female leftist activist during a peaceful protest in capital Cairo in January began on Sunday.

During the court hearing, the prosecution showed a video footage showing the killing of Shaimaa al-Sabagh, a member of the leftist Popular Alliance.

She was killed by birdshot on Jan. 24 during a peaceful protest on the eve of the 2011 revolution that ended the autocracy of longstanding President Hosni Mubarak.

The prosecution accuses police officer, Yassin Hatem, 24, of killing the female activist, which he denies.

The Cairo Criminal Court, which is hearing the case, ordered the arrest and detention of Hatem pending trial.

It set the coming hearing to May 14 to listen to the testimonies of the witnesses.

Al-Sabagh and fellow activists had held flowers and placards and marched onto downtown Cairo to mark the 4th anniversary of the revolution.

Soon, however, policemen arrived and started dispersing the protest and al-Sabagh received birdshot wounds that killed her a short time later.

The case sent shockwaves across Egypt, given the peaceful nature of the protest.
