(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Surprise result for challenger to President Komorowski.

Poland's Law and Justice party leader Andrzej Duda is ahead of his main rival, incumbent President Bronislaw Komorowski, in the first round of the country's contest to choose a new head of state, according to the official PAP news agency.

Voting in the Polish presidential election took place on Sunday, and according to unofficial first results, nationalist candidate Duda received 34.5 percent of the vote while the Komorowski received 33.1 percent.

Around 30 million eligible voters in Poland went to the polls while 42,000 Polish citizens applied to vote by mail € including 34,000 Poles living abroad € the country's State Electoral Commission said.

PAP news agency also reported that the commission is expected to publish official results of the first round of presidential election on Tuesday.

If no candidate secures at least 50 percent of the vote, a runoff poll will be held on May 24.

The role of president is largely ceremonial although the office-holder is head of the Polish armed forces and can veto legislation.
