Israeli gov't approves cabinet expansion

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Israel's newly-formed cabinet has unanimously voted on Sunday for a legal amendment to allow increasing the cabinet members to more than 18, in addition to unlimited appointment of ministers without portfolios and deputy ministers.

This is the third amendment to Basic Law; it will be put a Knesset vote tomorrow Monday, Israel Radio reported.

In an address to the meeting of his provisional cabinet, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed not put the set-up of the government to parliamentary vote before the Knesset passes today's legal amendment in its three readings.

He noted that his (outgoing) government was able to address all challenges in the recent years amid the mounting turmoil in the region.

Netanyahu added that the government was able to open new markets for the Israeli exports, particularly in the east and Southeast Asian countries, raise the minimum wages, curb the rise in the rate of unemployment, maintain the country's stable credit rating, and advance the electronic industry.

On the peace talks with the Palestinians, Netanyahu accused Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of giving up the track of peace when the peace process entered a stage requiring hard decisions.
