EU blasts new Israeli settlement construction

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) The European Union (EU) on Saturday censured Israel's approval of the latest plan to build 900 homes in Jewish settlements in occupied East Jerusalem, and warned it would undermine the two-state solution with the Palestinians.

The new construction was announced on Thursday, only hours after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu revealed the formation of a narrow governing coalition, made up of far-right parties that advocate settlement expansion in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The Israeli anti-settlement Peace Now leftist group broke news of the building, the latest in the internationally-condemned settlement policy.

Israel radio reported on Saturday that the EU condemned the construction in a statement, which said that Israel's adamant pursuit of its settlement policy, despite calls from the international community, would jeopardize the two-state solution.
