(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Russia celebrated the 70th anniversary of its victory in World War II today. The largest event during the festivities was the military parade in Moscow's Red Square, a grand event involving displays of the Russian army's newest hardware.
The parade opened with the solemn carrying of two flags, that of Russia and the historic banner that was raised over the Reichstag building in 1945 to declare that the seat of the German government had been at last captured by the Red Army.
The ceremony was attended by 30 national leaders, some 40 foreign officials, UN Secretary General Ban ki Moon and the head of UNESCO.
During his speech, Russian president Vladimir Putin asked for a minute of silence to honor those who had died during the war.
