Jordan, Sweden discuss economic cooperation

(MENAFN- Jordan News Agency) Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury discussed with Swedish Minister for Justice and Migration Morgan Johansson and his accompanying delegation bilateral ties and means of boosting cooperation in the economic and development fields.

Fakhoury thanked the Swedish government for its support for the region, including Jordan, and for providing humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees.

He also briefed Johansson and the accompanying delegation on current economic challenges, as well as the humanitarian and financial burdens that Jordan is facing due to the situation in the region.

The minister spoke about Syrians refugees in the Kingdom and the pressure they place on the budget, infrastructure and services, including education, health and water, especially in the northern and central parts of the Kingdom.

Fakhoury also reviewed the "Jordan 2025: Vision and National Strategy" which is Jordan's road map towards achieving development, growth and prosperity.

He cited the government's preparation of the 2015 Jordan Response Plan to the Syrian crisis (through the planning ministry), by following best practices in identifying burdens and evaluating the needs of refugees and the host communities and merging them into a single plan.

The plan was prepared with the participation of ministries, governmental institutions, several UN agencies, and donors, in addition to local and international non-governmental organisations.

Further, the plan was developed and agreed upon due to Jordan's resilience to the Syrian crisis, with the participation of most of the diplomatic missions in Jordan, UN agencies, international aid agencies and the non-governmental organisations' forum in Jordan.

During the meeting, Fakhoury also highlighted Sweden's role in convincing the international community of the need to support countries affected by crises through financial aid and soft loans, in order to sustain their corrective and developmental projects.

Johansson highlighted the depth of the relations binding the two countries and expressed his country's willingness to continue to support Jordan and the region, especially concerning the Syrian refugees.

He also commended Jordan's humanitarian role in hosting the Syrian refugees, adding that his country has prepared a strategy to support the region to ensure empowering host communities and providing humanitarian aid for refugees.

Additionally, the Swedish minister cited the donors' conference, which was recently held in Kuwait, adding that Sweden has pledged some $40 million to the region.

The two officials also discussed Sweden's financial plans for supporting countries affected by the Syrian crisis over the upcoming years, and Fakhoury called for allocating part of this financial support to Jordan.
