Qatar- QU holds third Engineering Week


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Qatar University College of Engineering (QU-CENG) launched its 3rd Engineering Week recently with the opening ceremony attended by members of QU leadership and representatives of the event's sponsors Dolphin Energy, QAPCO, and Occidental Petroleum Corporation.

The annual four-day event is a forum to exhibit engineering projects by students from all CENG departments. Also participating in the exhibition were CENG research centres Kindi Lab for Computing Research, Gas Processing Center and Qatar Road Safety Studies Center, sponsoring companies, as well as QAFAC, BAE Systems and ibTECHar Digital Solutions.

It is aimed at orienting high school and foundation students and members of the wider community on the importance of science and engineering in Qatar's growth and development. It is also an opportunity for young students to connect with their peers to discuss ideas and innovations and with industry organizations for guidance from their experts.

The opening ceremony included speeches by QU VP and Chief Academic Officer Dr Mazen Hasna, CENG dean Dr Rashid Al Ammarri and QAPCO Vice-Chairman and CEO and head of CENG Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) Dr Mohammed Yousef Al Mulla.

Also attending were CENG members Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies Prof Abdelmagid Hammuda, Associate Dean for Development and Industrial Relations Dr Saud Ghani, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Prof Adel Gastli, faculty and students as well as sponsors representatives, and IAB members.

The opening program also included an entertainment show and presentation by Qatar Emiri Air Force, the CENG student team "Passive House" who will represent Qatar in Shell Ideas360, and the winning team of Microsoft Imagine Cup Qatar 2015.

Over the 4-day event, male and female high school students from various local schools will attend the event which will include lectures and presentations, competitions, quizzes and technical demonstrations.

In his welcome address, Dr Hasna thanked the College of Engineering, the students, sponsors and the participating companies. "It is incumbent on QU to provide platforms such as this to bring stakeholders together to highlight science and engineering disciplines and to motivate students to pursue their studies in these fields, taking into consideration their role in Qatar's development. As the provider of the largest percentage of graduates to the industrial sector, we are pleased that this forum will do much to enhance high school and foundation students' decision to enrol at QU towards becoming the next generation of science and engineering professionals in Qatar".
