974 illegals arrested in Qassim


(MENAFN- Arab News) Police in Qassim arrested 974 illegal workers last week as part of the second phase of a "clean-up program" which was carried out in cooperation with the labor department in the region according to Qassim police spokesman Badr Al-Suhaibani.
'We carried out the raids in a number of institutions shops malls and industrial complexes' Al-Suhaibani said. During the operations the police teams cordoned off the areas in order to stop the illegal workers from fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement authorities conduct regular inspections to apprehend illegal workers in the region which curbs crimes such as theft sorcery the employment of illegal workers the brewing of liquor and other illegal activities.
According to officials most crimes in the Kingdom are committed by residents and workers who have overstayed their visas. As a result the government has intensified its campaign against this demographic.
During the amnesty period that was previously offered by late King Abdullah iIlegal residents were allowed to leave the Kingdom without any penalties throughout a grace period.
Earlier the Ministry of Interior advised all illegal expatriates in the Kingdom to correct their work and residency status following the end of the amnesty period on Nov. 1 2013 or leave the country.
The official pointed out that those arrested would be investigated and subjected to the relevant fines and repatriation procedures depending on the nature of their respective cases.
