Iran releases seized cargo ship, crew

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) Iran's Foreign Ministry has confirmed the release of a Marshall-Islands flagged cargo ship that had been seized by Iranian patrol boats in the Strait of Hormuz in late April.

The ministry said on May 7 that the 24 crew members of the Maersk Tigris also were released, and the ship has left Iran's territorial waters.

The cargo ship was diverted on April 28 amid a dispute over debts owed to a private Iranian firm by the Danish shipping company Maersk.

Iranian authorities insisted the Maersk Tigris and its crew would only be released after the years-old debt case was settled.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham had said on May 6 that negotiations between the private parties involved in the case were close to being resolved.

Maersk chartered the ship, which is owned by undisclosed private investors.
