Omani athletes to take part in Asian youth meet in Doha


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) An 18-member athletics squad will leave for Doha Qatar on Wednesday to take part in the inaugural edition of the Asian Youth Athletics Championships which will be held from May 8-11.

Oman's junior athletes have been undergoing a camp at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex from April 25-May 5.

Sheikh Ahmed Marhoon the vice-chairman of the Oman Athletics Association (OAA) will head the Omani delegation.

Over 400 athletes and more than 170 officials coaches and medical staff from 40 countries are expected to be in Doha for four days of action at Qatar SC's Suheim bin Hamad Stadium.

Dahlan al Hamad the President of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA) said at a press meet in Doha recently 'We are proud to host yet another significant sporting event in Qatar. We have done whatever it takes to ensure that the first Asian Youth Athletics Championships will be successful and will pave the way for the development of sport in Qatar especially for the young generation.'

Hamad added 'Our approach is to boost athletics and explore ways to encourage the youth in participating in sporting activities all across Asia. Our focus is on long-term planning and the development of sport.'
