Salman fans in Oman saddened by conviction critics say he deserved it

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Bollywood actor Salman Khan has a huge fan base in Oman which is evident from the fact that his films released mostly around Eid run to packed houses.

So it is only natural that his conviction on Wednesday in a 2002  Mumbai hit-and-run case evoked strong reactions from those who have been keenly following the actor's life and the case in which one pavement dweller was killed and four others were injured.

Khan has been charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder and driving under the influence.

There are those who feel that Khan deserves the five-year jail term. From the perspective of his die-hard fans the actor is paying for his celebrity status.

Khalid al Balushi a Hamriya resident hasn't missed any of Khan's films since 2010 and thinks the Bombay sessions court verdict is too harsh.

'He is a man of high morality. I had the chance to meet him in Dubai once and he came across as a very cordial and helpful person.

'His charity foundation Being Human works for the underprivileged in India. I am saddened by the court judgment.'

Thasleem Khan general manager Hyundai elevators says he trusts the Indian judiciary. 'He will have to pay for the crime. He will be behind bars soon' despite the interim bail given on the grounds that a copy of the lower court's order sentencing him was not received on time. The two-day interim bail by the Bombay High Court just hours after the sentence has not gone down too well with critics who think he has misused his clout.

Mohammad Kaleem a businessman from CBD said 'An interim bail soon after the sentencing...this shows the level of corruption in the judicial system. It is an open secret that Khan was the one driving the vehicle at the time of the incident.

'Even if he manages to avoid the term people should boycott his films.'

With millions riding on him Khan is one of Indian film industry's most bankable actors. The conviction will reflect on his current and forthcoming projects.

Ghanshyam Choudhary manager of City Cinema Ruwi says 'Salman Khan's movies are usually the biggest attractions during Eid and shows run to packed theatres. If the actor goes to jail his career will take a hit and so will theatres and multiplexes which bank on his movies.'
