Lord Darzi praises Qatar health sector

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) The Qatar-British Business Forum (QBBF) welcomed Professor the Lord Darzi of Denham as guest speaker this week at its monthly networking luncheon.

The event is part of ongoing events and activities to promote business opportunities in Qatar and, in particular, on how to encourage trade between the UK and Qatar.

QBBF chairman Emad Turkman opened the luncheon, noting the honour of hosting Lord Darzi who was last year awarded the Qatari Sash of Independence by HH the Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani in recognition of his contribution to Qatar's health sector.

"It is fitting our speaker is one of the world's leading lights in the field of medicine, who epitomises the best of Qatari-British relations. We are honoured to have Lord Darzi as our guest speaker," Turkman said, adding, "These events act as an important platform for prominent members of the business community to come together to exchange views and opinions, with the intention of growing industry opportunities and co-operation in Qatar."

Discussing healthcare challenges in Qatar, Lord Darzi highlighted the "dramatic improvements" over the past five years and praised the government in handling the challenges facing the sector, including rapid population growth, which puts an enormous strain on healthcare services and providers. "I think Qatar has done a remarkable job considering the pressures on it and at remarkable speed, tackling big challenges, particularly demand, which is growing significantly."

Lord Darzi added, "If you look at Qatar's research and science developments, as well as investment in new hospitals, it's fantastic. Not only that, but value for money is excellent. We can learn a lot from Qatar."

Noting his position in advising on Qatar's cancer strategy, Tara Quin, Qatar resident and QBBF member, shared her recent and ongoing experience with local cancer treatment facilities and staff. "I'm in awe of the system here," she said. "I think it's fantastic and couldn't have asked for better service."

Lord Darzi also noted the five big trends shaping global healthcare - science & technology, lifestyle diseases, ageing populations, information and wealth & funding. He highlighted the importance of implementing new ideas that create value, new products or services, new processes and new business models to drive innovation.

The luncheon is part of a series of events QBBF hosts throughout the year to discuss various topics, the last of which was attended by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes, who discussed the importance of sports for health and well-being.
