Serbia- Many Serbs want to keep women at home

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) New report on discrimination against women reveals that a quarter of people in Serbia, both men and women, believe a woman's greatest virtue is to be a good housewife.

Nevena Petrusic, the outgoing commissioner in Serbia for the protection of equality, presented a report on discrimination against women on Tuesday, which reveals that a surprisingly large number of people do not think they are fit for leadership roles.

According to the report, a quarter of all surveyed people believe that men alone should hold managements positions. The same percentage believe the most important thing for a woman is to be a "good housewife" and that men should be "the head of the family".

"If I would have to describe the situation in one sentence I would say that we are on the right track, but there is still a lot more to be done. The road ahead is not a highway, but hill path full of obstacles," Petrusic said.

She believes that state institutions must engage harder to improve the position of women in Serbian society, while the key role is in the education system and the media.

Meho Omerovic, president of parliament's board for human rights, stated that although Serbia had made progress in the fight against discrimination, the real-life situation of women was far from what laws guarantee for them.

Recent surveys and data from the Statistical Office show that women in Serbia work more then men while at the same time earning less.

According to the last data published in December, women's pensions are about 20 per cent lower then men's and few hold managerial posts.

Only about 5 per cent of municipal presidents in Serbia are women, for example, while they hold only about 15 per cent of all managerial posts, well below their proportion in society.
