Shurooq unveils Dh80million Al Noor Island

The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority on Tuesday launched the Dh80 million Al Noor Island its latest tourism and leisure project which is in line with the emirate’s aggressive plans of developing its tourism sector and that “fits Sharjah’s identity” as a must-go cultural and entertainment destination.

Noor Island is located in Khalid Lagoon and is the Arab world’s first island to combine nature art and entertainment.

The authority which is better known as Shurooq made the announcement at Arabian Travel Market 2015 and showcased the different state-of-the-art facilities that will comprise the island.

“The launch of Al Noor Island is in line with the vision of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah and well-synchronised with Sharjah being selected as the Capital of Arab Tourism 2015” said Shaikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi Chairperson of Shurooq.

“The project comes as part of our commitment to develop the emirate raise its economic and social merits and reinforce its position as a leading cultural tourism and investment destination in the region that serves the ambition of its residents and visitors and meets their interests.”

Al Noor Island is located in Khalid Lagoon and is the Arab world’s first island to combine nature art and entertainment. It extends over an area of 45470 sqm and reflects art styles of a world-renowned designer whose projects include the Swarovski Crystal Worlds museum including sculptures at the Schonbrunn Palace in Vienna.

“As per the vision of the Sharjah Tourism Authority to have 10 million visitors by 2021 Shurooq plays a major role in always promoting a new destination in Sharjah” Marwan bin Jassim Al Sarkal chief executive officer of Shurooq told Khaleej Times at the event.

“We are always looking to create a new inspiration for people to come to Sharjah.”

Al Sarkal stressed that Shurooq does its best to make its project “totally different but not trying to be too commercial”.

“When we develop a project we try to make sure the whole family enjoys it” he said. “It’s like going out of the city yet [still] be in the city.”

Al Noor Island consists of a uniquely-designed covered and streamlined structure inspired by butterflies’ natural environment; the Butterfly House one of its main attractions has an ornamentally-perforated shadow roof biomorphic exterior and green-light and plant-covered walls and will house as many as 500 exotic of these insects.

There will also be a Literature Pavilion a children’s playground and an egg-shaped OVO art sculpture while a pedestrian bridge will serve as the entrance to the island. The island will be operated by innovative technology.

Al Sarkal pointed out that Shurooq is committed to developing more projects. He says that the contractor for the Al Bait Hotel at the Heart of Sharjah will be announced “very soon”.

“This is all part of the vision... to create more destinations — and Shurooq is there to make it happen” he said. “What makes Sharjah unique is its authenticity and being true to its traditions.”
