GCC affirms political solution in Syria to restore stability, unity


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Leaders of six Arab Gulf countries have reaffirmed the political solution in Syria in line with the final communique of the June 2012 Geneva I conference would restore security, stability and territorial unity of Syria.

In a final communique at end of their one-day consultative meeting in Riyadh Tuesday, the leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) said the political solution would honor aspirations.

They called for the doubling of international efforts to provide humanitarian aid for the civilians affected by the Syrian conflict.

The Geneva I final communique calls for establishing an interim authority with an executive powers that would lead to an inclusive political process.

On Iraq, the GCC leaders expressed support for the government of Baghdad in its quest to achieve national reconciliation, eliminating the Islamic State in Iraq and Levant (ISIL) and guarantee participation of all Iraqi people in the political process.

A coalition of Western and Arab countries are bombarding ISIL militants in Syria and Iraq with the objective of eliminating the terrorist group.

On Libya, the Arab Gulf leaders expressed concern over the growing violence and terrorism which was threatening security, stability and unity of Libya.

They reiterated support for the elected parliament and legitimate government, as well as the UN efforts to resume comprehensive political dialogue.

The GCC leaders, meanwhile, said a comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East would not be achieved without Israel's full withdrawal from all Arab territories occupied in 1967 and establishment of the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital in line with relevant UN resolutions and the Arab peace initiative.

They condemned the systematic attacks by the Israeli authorities and extremist Jews against the unarmed Palestinians and places of worship including Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The heads of state also called for a firm confrontation against terrorism and terrorist groups, commending the security authorities in the member states in launching preventive measures against terrorism.
