GCC leaders say keen on "balanced relations" with Iran

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Arab Gulf leaders said Tuesday they were keen on establishing "balanced relations" with Iran that would contribute to security and stability of the region.

The leaders said they sought normal relations with Iran based on good neighborliness and respect of sovereignty, urging the Islamic Republic to adopt "serious steps" to rebuild mutual confidence in line with principles of international law, they said in a final statement at end of their one-day consultative summit in Riyadh.

The leaders hoped the framework agreement between the P5+1 group and Iran would lead to a final and comprehensive deal at end of June, guaranteeing the safety nature of the Iranian nuclear program.

They said the final agreement should comply with international standards related to safety of nuclear facilities, the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) full supervision as well as addressing environmental-related problems of the nuclear program.

They hoped the final agreement would contribute to solving outstanding issues with Iran.

The P5+1 group and Iran agreed to largely reduce the number of centrifuges and scale down the uranium enrichment in exchange of easing of sanctions on the Islamic Republic.

The GCC leaders, meanwhile, expressed firm support to the UAE's sovereignty over three islands - Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Moussa - which have been occupied by Iran since early 1970s, as an integral part of the United Arab Emirates.

They rejected Iran's occupation of the three islands, and would not recognize any bid by the Iranians to change their historic and legal status.

They called on Iran to respond to the UAE's calls to solve this issue either through direct negotiations or international arbitration.
