GCC leaders hope talks with US Pres. boost regional stability


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Leaders of Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states expressed hopes their planned talks with the US President Barack Obama, on May 13 in Camp David, would help strengthen close ties between the two sides and enhance region's security and stability.

At the conclusion of their 15th consultative meeting, held in Riyadh Tuesday, the GCC leaders reiterated their support to the Saudi-led "Decisive Storm" campaign, which was launched to restore legitimacy in Yemen.

The leaders lauded the campaign's significant outcome and the launching of the "Restoration of Hope" operation in response to a request from the Yemeni President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to restore legitimacy and resume the political process in accordance with the Gulf initiative, outcome of the Yemeni national dialogue and the relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

They urged full commitment to the UNSC resolution 2216, issued under Chapter VII of the UN Charter, to reestablish security and stability of Yemen and the region. They welcomed the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon's appointment of Ismail Ould Cheikh Ahmad as a new envoy to Yemen.

They welcomed the Yemeni president's decision to hold a conference under the umbrella of the GCC General Secretariat in Riyadh on May 17 for all pro-legitimacy Yemeni parties and social components.

The Gulf leaders welcomed President Hadi' decision to appoint Prime Minister Khaled Bahhah as a vice-president and the appointment of Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali Maqdashi as chief of staff Yemeni Army.

They voiced their support to the urgent measures taken by the Yemeni government to address the difficult humanitarian situation caused by the irresponsible practices of the Houthi militias and former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

They hailed the generous humanitarian aid provided by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, estimated at USD 274 million, and by the GCC countries. They urged the international community to accelerate the provision of further humanitarian aid to Yemen.

The GCC leaders welcomed the decision of Saudi Arabia in coordination with the coalition members to select a number of areas inside Yemen to deliver humanitarian aid in line with UN Security Council Resolution 2216.

They warned Houthi militias, rebels and their allies' against attempts to exploit the move to achieve gains on the ground, vowing that such steps would lead to the resumption of air operations over these areas.

They welcomed the Saudi decision to set up, on its territories, a unified center to coordinate humanitarian efforts among the United Nations, relevant international organizations and countries seeking to offer relief and humanitarian aid to Yemen. They hoped the move would help ease the suffering of Yemeni people and enable the United Nations to deliver humanitarian aid including the USD 274 million-worth aid pledged by the Saudi King.

The GCC leaders reiterated their determination to support development in Yemen and the complete the steps taken to enhance integration and partnership between the GCC and Yemen.
