Workshop on trends in teaching in Qatar


(MENAFN- Gulf Times) Three leading universities - University of Calgary in Qatar (UCQ), Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ) and College of the North Atlantic - Qatar (CNA-Q) € joined an annual conference hosted by UCQ's Centre for Teaching and Learning Centre yesterday through a workshop titled "Full Steam Ahead!".

In her keynote address opening the workshop, Maha Khamis al-Sulaiti, senior research analyst at Qatar Foundation, set the stage for the day by drawing attention to the critical role education plays in the nation's goals. "As all of you know, Qatar is striving to bring about National Vision 2030 and move our economy towards a sustainable knowledge-based economy. Education will help create this for the nation and be the instrument of transforming people and a nation. Moreover, innovation in education is the key for success of educators and students in this ever-changing global marketplace."

Workshop leaders explored a range of trends that expand the scope of teaching and learning in a university setting.

Peter Moore, entrepreneurship mentor with the Entrepreneurship Centre at CNA-Q, explored the melding of higher education with an entrepreneurial perspective in achieving Qatar National Vision 2030.
From the Centre for Teaching and Learning Centre at UCQ, director Dr Mary Gene Saudelli and teaching and learning specialist William Kay presented on eFolios (electronic portfolios) as a form of authentic, performance-based assessment tools offering a way to capture professional representation.

Tissa Salter, senior lecturer at TAMUQ, introduced the leading-edge idea of incorporating a focus on the arts in an education in engineering.

The UCQ Teaching and Learning Conference 2015 € "Health Sciences in Qatar: Teaching, Learning and Inter-Professionalism" € will be hosted today and tomorrow at Grand Heritage Hotel.

Students, educators and researchers from UCQ, HMC, Sidra Medical Research Center, PHCC, Qatar University and CNA-Q, as well as from Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, are attending the two-day event.
